CNN —Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff and Republican Steve Garvey have advanced to the general election in the open primary for California’s open Senate seat, CNN projects, setting up an uphill battle for the state’s beleaguered GOP. Under California’s open primary system, all candidates run on the same ballot, and the top two vote-getters, regardless of party, move on to the general election. Garvey beat two Democratic congresswomen – Reps. Katie Porter and Barbara Lee – to secure a place on the general election ballot, despite raising a fraction of what his opponents did and airing no TV ads. During the general election, Schiff will likely continue to emphasize his profile as one of the chief Trump antagonists in the House, a role bolstered by his work on the former president’s impeachment and various other Trump investigations. Schiff, Porter and Lee entered the race early last year, while Garvey launched his campaign in October.

Here are 9 things to watch for:The night the lights go out on HaleyBarring a stunning upset – actually, multiple stunning upsets across the country – Super Tuesday is looking like the end of the road for Haley. While Haley has said she would stay in the race through at least Super Tuesday, she has not hinted at an exit. A North Carolina governor’s race with implications up and down the ballotOn a Super Tuesday with an unusual lack of spice, the North Carolina gubernatorial primary is a rare exception. Mark Robinson and Democratic state Attorney General Josh Stein are expected to coast to their parties’ respective nominations. CNN —The immigration and border crisis is quickly morphing into the dominant issue of American politics – and Democrats are pivoting faster than Republicans at the moment. It took two tries, but House Republicans made their point and voted by the narrowest possible margin to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the first impeachment of a Cabinet secretary since the 1870s. He tacked to the middle specifically on the issue of immigration, hammering Republicans for refusing to work with Democrats on an immigration compromise. Except voters concerned about immigration told CNN reporters that it was also dysfunction on Capitol Hill – Republicans rejected even the idea of a bipartisan immigration deal last week – that drove their votes. Democrats and Republicans in the Senate joined together to pass a foreign aid package this week after it was decoupled from the border compromise.

The former South Carolina governor is pushing back hard against Trump’s bid to end the GOP primary race after only two nominating contests. She’s calling on voters to make a generational shift and is appealing especially to independents who can join the GOP primary in New Hampshire. According to a CNN poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire before DeSantis dropped out, Haley trailed Trump by 13 points in a two-person race. CNN —Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney said Tuesday that she’s committed to doing what’s necessary to stop former President Donald Trump from returning to the White House, as she continues to mull a third-party presidential run in 2024. Throughout her book, Cheney detailed how she saw her Republican colleagues fall in line to support his claims of election fraud following the 2020 election. In one instance, Cheney recalls GOP members reluctantly signing their names on electoral vote objection sheets for the states Republicans were contesting. Cheney has split with the Republican Party during previous elections. She also crossed party lines to stump for two moderate Democrats in competitive House races last year.

In the book, Cheney also condemns right-wing media for amplifying the disinformation coming from Trump and his allies. “Several months later, I heard the show had been in the final stages of production when it was shut down,” Cheney writes. Cheney writes that Pelosi’s team “pulled together a list of the 10 worst things I had ever said about her.

CNN —New House Speaker Mike Johnson is already tying Washington in new partisan knots. Johnson surprises by picking Israel funding as his first test of credibilityJohnson’s hard ball play on Israel funding came as a surprise given that some of the urgency for ending the speakership impasse last week was to swiftly clear a funding package following the Hamas attacks. The Biden administration on Tuesday formally threatened to veto the House GOP’s standalone Israel aid bill. The inclusion of the offsets could indicate that Johnson needs to placate his most hardline members even to pass a measure as popular as Israel funding. Some other Senate conservatives are also at odds with their leader, backing the decoupling of Israel and Ukraine aid.

How the ‘uniparty’ myth shut the House down

CNN —Republicans’ House speaker morass continued Tuesday with a little help from former President Donald Trump. Yet another lawmaker with support from most House Republicans – Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota, who was picked as their party’s nominee – failed to get the support of nearly all Republicans. What is ‘uniparty?’The term “uniparty” has been a favorite of people like Steve Bannon, the former Trump White House official turned podcaster. “You’ve got a small band of House conservatives who are fighting, really, in a lot of ways, a political guerrilla war against that uniparty,” Gaetz said. The majority of House Republicans backed Emmer, their fourth choice this year to be speaker, in both secret ballot voting and a behind-closed-doors roll call vote.

Before the court action, Alabama – which is 27% Black – had only one Black-majority congressional district out of seven seats. The case is expected to land before the all-Republican state Supreme Court, where DeSantis appointees hold most seats. A separate federal case in Georgia challenges the congressional map on constitutional grounds and is slated to go to trial next month. UtahThe state Supreme Court, in a case it heard in July, is considering whether it even has the authority to weigh in on map-drawing decisions by the GOP-controlled state legislature. Advocacy groups and a handful of voters are challenging a congressional map that further carved up Democratic-leaning Salt Lake County between four decidedly Republican districts.

CNN —Rep. ET Wednesday in what could be a pivotal moment for Jordan’s candidacy that will show whether he is losing or gaining support. But it’s not clear if Jordan has a viable path forward in the race amid the deep divisions within the House GOP conference and the resistance he faces. Uncertainty over Jordan’s candidacy threatens to prolong the state of paralysis the House is currently stuck in. Scalise initially defeated Jordan inside the GOP conference to become the speaker nominee, but later dropped out of the race amid opposition to his candidacy.

And in a razor-thin GOP majority, Scalise needs the support of all but four of his conference to secure the gavel if every Democrat casts a ballot. “I love Steve Scalise,” Rep. Rep. Ruben Gallego is running for the Democratic nomination, setting up a potential three-way race if Sinema runs as an independent. But polling shows that Sinema and Gallego would not simply divide the Democratic vote, handing the race to GOP firebrand Lake. In a three-way race, Gallego is ahead in Noble's polling, with 34% support, compared to 26% for Sinema and 25% for Lake. The House vote to oust Kevin McCarthy from his post on Tuesday marked a historic first, as a group of conservatives sided with Democrats to successfully boot him from the speakership. Immediately following the vote to oust McCarthy, a temporary speaker – Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina – took over based upon a list of succession that the former speaker submitted in January. In his first move in the temporary role, McHenry recessed the chamber to “discuss the path forward,” before lawmakers returned to their districts for the week. Following the vote, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was ordered to vacate her Capitol hideaway. Pelosi called the move a “sharp departure from tradition,” as other former speakers have been permitted to retain offices near the House chamber beyond their tenure.

The House narrowly voted to oust Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday, dooming the House speaker to a fate that seemed almost guaranteed since he took the gavel in January, with a group of rebels in his conference nipping at his heels. “The office of speaker of the House of the United States House of Representatives is hereby declared vacant,” the clerk announced as the vote concluded. A temporary speaker – Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina – is expected to take over based upon a list of succession that McCarthy submitted in January, according to House rules . But in 2015, McCarthy’s speaker bid abruptly ended amid pushback from right-wing lawmakers who have long seen him as insufficiently conservative. Naming Laphonza Butler to fill the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein's seat appears to meet California Gov. Or has Newsom just given Butler a massive boost in becoming the Golden State's fourth elected female senator? And while critics have pointed out that her address until the appointment was in Maryland, Butler "is deeply ingrained in the DNA of California politics." Butler, who will be sworn into the Senate this week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday morning, hasn't indicated whether she wants to stay in the job. CNN —House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s allies are scrambling to head off a right-wing revolt to oust the California Republican from his job and turning to the constituency that now suddenly holds the cards: House Democrats. But House Democrats also acknowledge that they don’t know another Republican who can get the 218 votes needed to clinch the speakership. “My advice to my fellow Democrats is simple: Follow the leader,” former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” with Jake Tapper. In a tight election, amid questionable economic conditions and with the normality that Biden promised in 2020 still fleeting, the threat may be greater than ever. A pseudo general election campaignBoth Trump and Biden showed up in Michigan courting blue-collar votes this week. He returned to the theme that democracy is under attack – seemingly a slam dunk given Trump’s week of autocratic outbursts and demagoguery. And all previous evidence suggests that, among GOP voters at least, Trump legal travails only boost his poll numbers and fundraising. To anyone who has forgotten the constant tearing at legal, political and constitutional norms that characterized almost every day of the last presidency, Gaetz and his fellow MAGA troops are proving that Trumpism sows chaos.

While the idea of using the 14th Amendment to keep Trump out of the White House has been bandied about by lawyers and political figures, the Colorado action is the first lawsuit demanding that a state disqualify Trump from the ballot, CREW said. The group chose Colorado because the laws there make it easier to get it before a court, he says. Some members of Congress, most recently Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California, have suggested the 14th Amendment might apply to Trump. Critics of the movement to disqualify Trump say the 14th Amendment clause was written to apply to former Confederates and should not be used against contemporary would-be candidates. Still, those who want to use the 14th Amendment to disqualify Trump face significant legal hurdles, experts say, adding that the matter is likely to end up in the Supreme Court if the movement gains steam.

However, Carlson and Greene's theories fail to note that many mass shooters had no history of taking psychiatric medication. As the gun control debate continues, Democrats and Republicans have drawn up distinctly different plans to prevent future mass shootings.
“I hope the Republican Party can muster the courage to oppose late-term abortion like we have done in the past. But after the midterms produced a slimmer-than-expected majority, there now appears to be little appetite inside the House GOP for such a bill. The National Right to Life Committee said it is in regular communication with House Republican leadership about possible legislative efforts and educational needs on the issue. “What we’re working on right now is primarily reacquainting members with the abortion issue after the Dobbs decision.
